Owl
Process Master
"Makes sure things move forward"
About the Owl
The Owl is the process person. They make sure things are done in order and that everything is covered. The Owl is there to say 'I'm sorry, we need to move on', which forces the group to vote on the current issue and move to the next item in the plan. They make sure all the things get ticked off and analyse interactions to ensure goals are being met and timelines are identified. The Owl values agency in process control, with a secondary drive for relatedness to ensure the process serves everyone.

Secondary Need (SDT)
SDT Description
Driven by self-governed structure and group welfare. Wants to ensure that the group moves forward and has the chance to make decisions about each of the parts of the project.
Key Behaviors
- Ensures things are done in order
- Makes sure everything is covered
- Says 'we need to move on' to keep the group progressing
- Forces the group to vote and move to the next item
- Makes sure all tasks get ticked off
- Ensures goals are being met and timelines are identified
How to Fulfil the Owl Role
- Create agendas for meetings and track action items
- Set time limits for discussions and enforce them diplomatically
- When debates stall, call for a vote or decision
- Maintain a task list and review progress at each meeting
- Ensure deadlines are set and visible to the group
- Balance process with flexibility — process serves the group, not the other way around
When There Is No Owl
Without an Owl, scope creep is rampant. Meetings overrun with no outcomes. Tasks are forgotten because no one tracks them. There is no accountability, and the group revisits the same decisions repeatedly without resolution.
Multi-classing
In smaller groups, one person may need to cover two roles. Compatibility depends on whether the underlying motivational drives conflict.
Easy Combinations
Owl + Rabbit
Process management pairs naturally with resource facilitation. The Owl ensures things move forward (Agency/Relatedness) while the Rabbit ensures the group has what it needs (Competence/Relatedness). They share Relatedness as a need.
Owl + Cat
Process control and risk identification are complementary. Both are Agency-primary roles that focus on different aspects of project control — the Owl on structure, the Cat on risk.
Owl + Bear
Vision and process control combine well. The Bear sets the direction while the Owl ensures structured progress toward the goal. A manager who holds the vision and keeps the process moving.
Owl + Puppy
Process and positivity can coexist. The Owl keeps things on track (Agency/Relatedness) while the Puppy maintains morale (Relatedness/Competence). They share Relatedness as a need.
